About Northstowe Karate Club

Northstowe Karate Club is a friendly Shotokan karate club serving Northstowe, Cambridge and the surrounding villages. We welcome children aged 8 and over, teenagers, adults and families, from complete beginners to experienced martial artists.

Our aim is simple: to provide high-quality traditional karate training in a safe, supportive and welcoming environment where students can develop confidence, fitness, self-discipline and practical self-defence skills. Kids, adults and families train side-by-side.

We believe karate is for everyone - regardless of background, or physical ability. Our instructors foster a respectful and supportive atmosphere where diversity is celebrated, and every member feels valued. From children developing coordination and focus to adults seeking fitness or self-defence skills, Northstowe Karate Club offers a space where personal growth and community spirit go hand in hand.

Why we train

Karate is much more than punching and kicking. Regular training develops physical fitness, coordination and resilience, but it also teaches patience, respect and perseverance.

Whether your goal is fitness, self-defence, personal development or simply learning something new, karate provides a lifelong path of improvement.

At Northstowe Karate Club, students train together regardless of age or experience, helping one another progress while challenging themselves to improve.

Out Story and Purpose

Northstowe Karate Club was established as a non-profit community club to provide accessible, high-quality karate training for the growing communities of Northstowe and the surrounding area.

We wanted to create a club where beginners would feel comfortable starting their martial arts journey while experienced students could continue to develop their skills in a traditional and respectful environment.

Students regularly travel from Northstowe, Longstanton, Oakington, Histon, Cottenham, Cambridge and other nearby villages to train with us.

Our Instructors

Simon Apen-Sadler, our chief instructor, is a 4th dan black belt with over 20 years of experience. He is first aid qualified, holds an enhanced DBS check, and regularly trains with senior JKA instructors. Simon’s teaching philosophy is to balance discipline with encouragement, helping every student progress at their own pace. Simon enjoys helping students of all ages gain confidence, improve their fitness and achieve goals they may not have thought possible when they first stepped onto the dojo floor.
